This dataset provides a newly constructed cross-country panel covering populist leadership and macroeconomic indicators from 1900 to 2020. It was used by Manuel Funke, Moritz Schularick, and Christoph Trebesch in their 2023 American Economic Review study to quantify the long-term economic consequences of populism. The dataset identifies 51 populist leaders globally and matches their terms with GDP, inflation, trade, institutional quality, and more to assess long-run economic divergence.
